Competition 1 of the Build Verdis Competition has been completed! We are proud to announce the winners of Competition 1.
The Build Verdis Competition was created to encourage the community to visualise what Verdis could look like in the future. The program consists of 3 competitions, the first focuses on 2D map proposals, the second being 3D visualisations converted from the 2D maps, and the third competition turning 3D visualisations into an explorable, realistic map where the community can walk around and experience proposals of the country’s visual future.
During Competition 1, participants made a 2D map proposal of Verdis, including districts and essential infrastructure such as ports, roads, hospitals, and other key essentials necessary for the state’s development.
The submissions received showed a range of ideas and approaches to urban planning, taking into account the country’s size and terrain.
All received submissions were voted on by members of the cabinet.
Thank you to all participants for their contributions and we congratulate the winners on their outstanding work.
The winning participants are now in the process of receiving their prizes. You can view their full masterplans at the end of the article.
The winners of Competition 1:
First Place: Tholos Architects
A team of 4 people at Tholos Architects provided an outstanding 58 page entry and masterplan surrounding their visualisation of what Verdis could look like in the future, taking into account materials and resources available that could be purchased in neighbouring Croatia and Serbia, with an in-depth analysis and comparison on other small countries. Their team focused on progressive architecture, the Danube, essential infrastructure, comfortability, and environmental protection.
Tholos Architects team: Artenisa Arifllari; Marco Spada; Nader Gebran; Riccardo Fabrizio

Second Place: Nikola Stojanovski
Mr Stojanovski provided a masterplan and 2D map of Verdis as a “living laboratory” of sustainable urbanism – a compact, eco-friendly state that harmonises high-density living with the neutral rhythms of the Danube river. He prioritised flood resilience, passive climate design, and a walk-first mobility framework. The design he provided maximises the quality of life while also minimising the ecological footprint in the country.

Third Place: Fredrick Wabusa
Mr Wabusa presented to us a master plan of his vision of Verdis in the future, organised into clearly defined districts that balance the country’s economic growth, sustainability and community living, while also taking into account important environmental factors such as recreational parks, green open spaces and a well-connected transportation network that links the country while also preserving environmental quality and accessibility.

Thank you again to all participants, and congratulations to the winners!
